Tracy
Tracy was founded as a convenient lynchpin in the Central Pacific Railroad in 1869. A small community called Lathrop grew around the railroad line which became the main form of transportation from Sacramento to San Francisco, servicing the ambitious hordes of gold miners. Lathrop was adjacent to a coaling station called Ellis which was built to fuel the railroad. This artery was intercepted in 1878 when a new rail line with a more direct, level track was built linking Oakland through Martinez and avoiding the Alta Mont Pass. This new rail; line provided the impetus for the founding of the town of Tracy in September of 1878. The entire town of Ellis was moved toTracy when the railroad closed down the coaling process there in late 1878.Tracy further benefited from the closure of the Lathrop station in 1894 when that entire community was relocated to Tracy. The City of Tracy was incorporated in 1910.
As the price of housing has increased in the San Francisco Bay Area, many people who work in the southern reaches of the Bay Area have opted for the longer commute and moved to Stanislaus County for the relatively affordable housing, and have been consequently hit disproportionately hard by the recession with higher incidences of foreclosures and bankruptcy than other counties in California.
